There has been a very large arguement on the topic of gun control these days, more so than I can ever remember during my lifetime. But those advicating the control and banning of guns from the public are trying to put out the fire while aiming at the flames.
A gun is a tool, it is neither good nor bad and does not have a mind of its own. It is the person holding the gun who controls it, not the other way around. If no guns existed we would have the same issues as today, there are knifes, bows, spears, bombs, sharp objects etc. These other tools would just as well take its place. Removing one tool is not the problem, and will only allow criminals(who I doubt would turn in their guns) a looser leash and would cause more devestation.
I have heard people discuss the lack of police enforcement(low funding) as another blame for the occurance of all these tragedies. But in all honesty unless you had a 50-50 ratio of police officers to people you still would not be able to protect everyone. An oppurtunity would arise and a criminal would have the ability to take another life. Police officers cannot watch every person, every moment of every day. Its impossible. It cannot be done.
So what is the solution if taking guns away and stepping up law enforcement are not the answer?
EMPOWER THE PEOPLE
I propose that instead of taking away our guns we offer(or possibly require) education to gun owners and the public on gun safety and responsibility. Teach people how to defend themselves, and how to handle themselves in dangerous situations. If enough good citizens were educated and trained to defend themselves we would be able to diffuse a shooting spree early and save lives. We would be able to lower the number of murders and ensure our families safety. The police provide a valuable service, but unfortunately there are situations were they dont make it in time. The only effective solution I see is to prepare ourselfs to fight back against those who try to steal our right to life.
This is my view, and if you support it please feel free to share.

I largely agree with what you said. Maybe it would be a really good time to put guns back in our schools? Maybe instead of having “Gun Free School Zones” we ought to have realistic classes that taught people about guns, safety, and responsibility?
A lot of people think we need to teach kids a lot about safe sex. Ok, if that is ok, then why not have classes on “Safe Guns,” how to use a gun, how to safely handle it, and your personal responsibility in owning one?
I completely agree with you, I think the best way to eliminate a problem is to educate yourself with how to deal with it. There definately should be a mass education on gun safety and responsible use. I don’t understand why one is not in place all ready.
